Indoors in carpets, upholstery, closets, and other undisturbed areas; larvae hide in dark, lint-rich locations.

Larvae eat keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects; adults mainly consume pollen and nectar.

Larvae are slow-moving, often hairy, and may curl or remain still when disturbed. They develop through several molts before pupating; adults commonly gather near windows and flowers.

They can damage natural-fiber clothing, carpets, and museum specimens, and larval hairs may irritate sensitive skin or airways. They recycle animal-derived organic matter and adults pollinate flowers.
