Flat-backed millipede

Moist leaf litter, rotting logs, forest soil, and shaded gardens; often appears on pavement after rain.

Feeds mainly on decaying leaves, wood, and other organic matter, helping recycle nutrients.

Slow-moving and nonaggressive; curls or releases defensive chemicals when disturbed. It is most active in damp conditions and at night.

Not dangerous to people, though defensive secretions may irritate skin or stain it; avoid handling eyes after contact. Beneficial decomposer and food source for wildlife.
