Natural Habitat

Arid regions of Mexico, Central and South America, and the Southwestern United States, primarily found on prickly pear cacti (Opuntia).

Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; they extract nutrients from cactus sap using specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

The females are sessile, remaining fixed to the host cactus while producing a white waxy secretion for protection. They reproduce primarily through eggs, which hatch into nymphs or 'crawlers.'

Risks & Benefits

Benefits include its use as a major source of natural red dye (carmine) for food and cosmetics. Risks involve potential allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock in a very small percentage of the human population.
