Eastern Tent Caterpillar

Size: Larvae grow to approximately 2 inches (50 mm) in length.

Natural Habitat
Found in deciduous forests, parks, and gardens, particularly near fruit trees such as cherry, apple, and crabapple.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the foliage of host trees, primarily members of the Rose family (Rosaceae), including wild cherry and apple.
Behavior Patterns
Social insects that build communal silk nests (tents) in the crotches of tree branches. They emerge from the tent to feed several times a day and follow silk trails back to the nest.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a minor pest as they can defoliate trees; however, healthy trees usually recover. They are a food source for birds and other wildlife. Their hairs may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
