Size: Larvae grow up to 3 inches (7-8 cm) in length; adult wingspan is 2 to 3.5 inches.

Natural Habitat
Found across North and Central America in diverse environments including deserts, gardens, meadows, and agricultural fields.
Diet & Feeding
Caterpillars are generalist feeders on plants such as evening primrose, willowherb, and fuchsia (shown in image). Adults nectar on flowers.
Behavior Patterns
Features a prominent 'horn' at the rear and distinctive eyespots. They are often active during both day and night/dusk (crepuscular). They burrow into the soil to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans; they do not sting despite the 'horn'. They are beneficial pollinators as adult moths (resembling hummingbirds), though large numbers of larvae can occasionally damage garden foliage.
