Indoors near windows, carpets, upholstery, stored textiles, and collections; adults may occur on flowers outdoors.

Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects. Adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are slow-moving, bristly, and hide in dark undisturbed areas; they shed distinctive hairy skins. Adults are attracted to light and may enter through windows.

Larvae can damage natural-fiber clothing, carpets, and museum specimens, and their hairs may irritate sensitive skin. They are harmless to people and contribute to decomposition outdoors.
