Natural Habitat

Gardens, woodland edges, shrubs, and other sunny areas with flowers and suitable mud or soil for nesting.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed mainly on nectar and may consume ripe fruit juices. Females provision nests with caterpillars or other insect larvae for their developing young.

Typically solitary; females build mud nests or use preexisting cavities, stock each cell with paralyzed prey, lay one egg, and seal it. They are generally nonaggressive unless handled or their nest is disturbed.

Risks & Benefits

Usually low risk to people, though females can sting if threatened. Beneficial predators of caterpillars and other plant pests, and adults can contribute to pollination.
