Hister Beetle (Clown Beetle)

Natural Habitat

Found in decaying organic matter, including carrion (dead animals), dung, rotting fungi, and leaf litter.

Diet & Feeding

Predatory; they primarily eat the larvae (maggots) of flies and other beetles found in decaying matter.

Behavior Patterns

They are mostly nocturnal and are known for 'thanatosis' or playing dead by pulling their legs and antennae into grooves on their body. They are often oval-shaped with short, hard wing covers (elytra) that leave the end of the abdomen exposed.

Risks & Benefits

They pose no risk to humans; they do not bite or sting. They are highly beneficial to ecosystems as they help control fly populations and are used in forensic entomology to estimate the time of death in criminal investigations.
