Sac spider
Clubionidae (Family)
- Order & Family
- Araneae, Clubionidae
- Size
- Typically 3-15 mm (0.12-0.6 inches) in body length.
Natural Habitat
Sac spiders are commonly found in and around homes, especially in gardens, under leaf litter, bark, stones, and sometimes indoors on walls, ceilings, or upholstered furniture, as seen in the image. They prefer creating silken sacs for resting or molting rather than traditional webs.
Diet & Feeding
They are nocturnal hunters, feeding on various small insects and other arthropods. They actively stalk and ambush their prey rather than capturing it in a web.
Behavior Patterns
Sac spiders are typically nocturnal, active hunters. During the day, they retreat into a silken sac usually found in a rolled leaf, under bark, or in a secluded spot indoors. They are generally not aggressive but may bite if they feel threatened or are accidentally pressed against skin.
Risks & Benefits
The bite of a sac spider is usually not medically significant for humans, though it can be painful and may cause a red lesion, itching, or swelling, which typically resolves within a few days. For the ecosystem, they act as natural pest control by preying on many common household and garden insects.
