Diet & Feeding
Broad range of dried food products including grains, cereals, nuts, dried fruit, pet food, birdseed, spices, and even chocolate. They prefer coarser materials.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are typically found within the food source, often spinning silken tubes or webbing as they feed. They are active feeders and can move surprisingly quickly when disturbed. Pupation often occurs within the food material or in a nearby crack or crevice.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Significant pest of stored food products, causing contamination and damage to food, leading to economic losses. Their webbing can be unsightly. They are not known to bite or sting humans. Benefits: None in a domestic or food storage context; can serve as food for other insects in natural environments.
