Indoors in carpets, upholstered furniture, closets, and stored natural-fiber materials; adults may occur around flowers and windows.

Larvae consume wool, fur, feathers, silk, shed skin, dead insects, and other keratin-rich debris. Adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are hairy, slow-moving, and hide in dark, undisturbed areas; they molt repeatedly and leave shed skins. Adults often appear near windows in spring and summer.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and stored textiles, and their hairs may irritate sensitive skin or airways. They help decompose animal-derived material outdoors.
