Natural Habitat
Found worldwide in forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas; they often enter homes at night attracted by lights.
Diet & Feeding
Adults typically feed on nectar, pollen, flowers, or small soft-bodied insects. Larvae, known as wireworms, live in soil and eat decaying vegetation or plant roots.
Behavior Patterns
Notable for their clicking mechanism; when turned on their backs, they use a specialized prosternal spine to snap and launch themselves into the air to right themselves or escape predators. Most are nocturnal.
Risks & Benefits
They are harmless to humans and do not bite or sting. However, their larvae (wireworms) can be significant agricultural pests by damaging the roots of crops like corn, potatoes, and cereal grains.
