Drain Fly Larvae
Psychodidae family
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 3mm to 10mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in moist environments rich in organic matter, such as bathroom drains, septic tanks, sewers, and damp soil.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on decaying organic matter, algae, fungi, and bacteria found in the gelatinous film that forms in drains.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic and live within the film of drains. They possess a characteristic breathing tube (siphon) visible at the tail. They pupate near the surface of the organic film before emerging as fuzzy, moth-like adult flies.
Risks & Benefits
They generally do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. However, their presence indicates a buildup of organic material or potential plumbing issues. In large numbers, they can be a nuisance, but they benefit ecosystems by breaking down organic waste.
