Adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar. Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, dead insects, and natural-fiber fabrics.

Adults are compact, oval, and mottled, often resting motionless or curling their legs when disturbed. Larvae are hairy and can develop indoors for months to years, with adults emerging in spring or summer.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and stored natural materials; their hairs may cause skin or respiratory irritation. They also help decompose animal remains and recycle nutrients.
