Varied Carpet Beetle

Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in carpets, near baseboards, in closets, and around natural fibers (wool, silk, fur). Outdoors, adults are found on flowers.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, and dried leather. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places (like under furniture or in the back of closets) and are often the stage that causes damage. Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windows.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Larvae can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, upholstered furniture, and museum specimens. They do not bite or sting but their fuzzy hairs can cause skin irritation (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they help decompose dead animal matter.
