Dragonfly Nymph (Naiad)

Natural Habitat

Freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving streams, often clinging to submerged vegetation or debris.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous and predatory; they eat aquatic insects, tadpoles, and even small fish using a specialized extendable lower lip (labium).

Behavior Patterns

They are ambush predators that spend most of their life underwater (up to several years). They breathe through internal gills in their rectum and can move rapidly by ejecting water through their anus (jet propulsion).

Risks & Benefits

Benefits: Effectively control mosquito populations by eating larvae. Risks: None to humans; however, large specimens can be predators of small pet fish in ornamental ponds.
