Natural Habitat
Eucalyptus forests, woodlands, and urban areas with eucalyptus trees; native to Australia but introduced to other regions.
Diet & Feeding
Leaves of Eucalyptus trees. Both larvae and adults are herbivorous and specifically target the tender new growth of various Eucalyptus species.
Behavior Patterns
They are most active during the warmer months and have a life cycle that includes four larval stages (instars) before pupating in the soil. Adults are strong fliers and can often be found congregating on host leaves.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered a significant pest in commercial eucalyptus plantations and urban landscaping as they can cause severe defoliation. They serve as a food source for some predatory insects and birds, but have few natural enemies outside of their native range.
