Loxosceles reclusa
- Order & Family
- Araneae, Sicariidae
- Size
- Body length typically 6-20 mm (0.24-0.79 inches), with legs extended up to 30 mm (1.2 inches).
Natural Habitat
Found in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, attics, basements, storage areas, and often moved indoors through boxes or furniture. They prefer dry, secluded environments.
Diet & Feeding
Insectivorous. Preys on small insects and other arthropods, typically ambushing prey rather than using a web to trap them.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and reclusive. They are not aggressive and usually only bite when pressed against human skin (e.g., when dressing or rolling over in bed). They do not build typical orb webs but create irregular silk retreats for shelter.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risk: Their venom is cytotoxic, meaning it can cause tissue damage (necrosis) at the bite site. Bites can range from mild to severe, sometimes requiring medical attention. Benefits: They help control populations of other household pests.
