Diet & Feeding

Mostly predatory on other small insects and mites; some species eat decaying plant matter, fungi, or pollen.

Behavior Patterns

Risks & Benefits

Benefits: Generally beneficial as they prey on garden and agricultural pests. Risks: Some genera (like Paederus) can cause skin irritation (dermatitis) if crushed against the skin due to a toxin called pederin.
