Natural Habitat

Mostly predatory on other small insects and mites; some species eat decaying plant matter, fungi, or pollen.
Behavior Patterns
Recognized by their short elytra (wing covers) that leave most of the abdomen exposed. They are fast runners and often tip their abdomen up like a scorpion when threatened, though they do not sting.

Benefits: Generally beneficial as they prey on garden and agricultural pests. Risks: Some genera (like Paederus) can cause skin irritation (dermatitis) if crushed against the skin due to a toxin called pederin.
