Solenopsis invicta
- Order & Family
- Hymenoptera / Formicidae
- Size
- Workers measure 1.5 mm to 5 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Soil (building large mounds), lawns, pastures, and sometimes electrical equipment; native to South America but invasive in places like the southern US.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; feeds on other insects, plant nectar, seeds, and human food scraps (sweets, oils, proteins).
Behavior Patterns
Aggressive defenders of their colony; when disturbed, they swarm and sting in unison. The venom contains solenopsin, which kills cells and causes a unique reaction.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Stings cause an immediate burning sensation followed by a characteristic white, sterile, fluid-filled pustule (as likely shown in the image) within 24 hours. Can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Benefits: They prey on other pest insects like flea larvae and cockroaches.
