Natural Habitat
Commonly found in and around human dwellings, kennels, and on domestic dogs; can complete its entire life cycle indoors.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly hematophagous (blood-feeders), primarily feeding on domestic dogs, but will occasionally bite humans or other mammals.
Behavior Patterns
A three-host tick that seeks hosts through questing; after feeding at each life stage (larva, nymph, adult), it drops off to molt or lay eggs in cracks and crevices.
Risks & Benefits
Significant risk as a vector for various pathogens including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis; no known benefits to humans or ecosystems.
