Plaster Bagworm
Phereoeca uterella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera: Tineidae
- Size
- Case length: 8-14mm; Slender larva within is much smaller.
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments with high humidity, typically found on walls, undersides of furniture, and baseboards.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on spider webs and natural fibers, including wool, hair, and silk, as well as organic dust.
Behavior Patterns
The larva constructs a protective silk case covered in sand, dust, and debris. It is open at both ends, allowing the larva to feed from either side and drag the 'bag' across surfaces.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered a nuisance pest. While they can occasionally damage silk or wool fabrics, they are primarily scavengers of old spider webs and do not bite or sting humans.
