Size: Wingspan typically 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12-20 mm). Larvae are about 1/2 inch (12 mm) long when fully grown.

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in homes, grocery stores, food processing plants, and anywhere dry stored food products are present. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on a wide variety of dried food products including grains (corn, rice, flour, cereal), dried fruits, nuts, seeds, pet food, birdseed, spices, and sometimes even chocolate. Adult moths do not feed.

Behavior Patterns

Adult moths are nocturnal or crepuscular and are often seen flying in a zigzag pattern. Females lay eggs directly on or near food sources. Larvae spin silken webs as they feed, which can contaminate food. Pupation usually occurs away from the food source in cracks, crevices, or corners of shelves.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include significant damage and contamination of stored food products, leading to financial losses and potential health concerns if heavily infested food is consumed. They are not known to bite or transmit diseases. There are no notable benefits associated with this pest.
