Natural Habitat

Agricultural fields, vegetable gardens, and landscapes where legumes are grown; found primarily on the undersides of leaves.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; both larvae and adults feed on the foliage of legumes, including garden beans (snap, lima, soy), cowpeas, and clover.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are distinguished by their bright yellow color and six rows of black-tipped, branched spines. They typically feed on the lower surface of leaves, removing the tissue between veins, resulting in a characteristic 'skeletonized' appearance.

Risks & Benefits

Major agricultural pest that can significantly reduce crop yields through defoliation. Unlike most other ladybugs, they do not provide the benefit of consuming aphids or other garden pests.
