Natural Habitat

Indoors around carpets, upholstered furniture, closets, stored fabrics, and accumulations of pet hair or dead insects. Adults may occur near windows and flowers.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, silk, and dried insects. Adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar and do not damage fabrics.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae hide in dark, undisturbed areas and shed bristly skins as they develop; adults are attracted to light and reproduce indoors. Their presence often indicates a concealed food source or nest debris.

Risks & Benefits

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and other natural-fiber materials; shed hairs may irritate skin or airways. They are otherwise harmless and adults contribute modestly to pollination and decomposition.
