Natural Habitat

Found worldwide in human structures, specifically pantries, kitchens, and storage warehouses where food and organic materials are kept.

Diet & Feeding

A generalist feeder that consumes a wide variety of dry organic materials, including flour, cereal, dry pet food, spices (like paprika), leather, books, and even pharmaceutical drugs.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are active flyers and are attracted to light. They lay eggs on food sources; the larval stage involves a C-shaped grub that does most of the feeding damage. They have a symbiotic relationship with yeast that allows them to survive on nutrient-poor materials.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include contamination and destruction of stored food products, museum specimens, and books. They are a significant economic pest but are not physically harmful or toxic to humans or pets.
