Size: Adults range from 3-5 mm (unfed) to 15 mm (fully engorged).

Natural Habitat
Commonly found in areas with little or no tree cover, such as grassy fields and walkways, and along trails in wooded areas.
Diet & Feeding
Hematophagous (blood-feeding); primarily parasitizes small mammals, dogs, and humans.
Behavior Patterns
Three-host life cycle involving questing behavior on vegetation to latch onto passing hosts. Can survive for several years without feeding.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risk to humans and animals as a primary vector for Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. No significant ecosystem benefits to humans.
