Stick insect, Walking stick
Phasmatodea (order)
- Order & Family
- Phasmatodea (order), various families (e.g., Phasmatidae, Diapheromeridae)
- Size
- Typically "1" to "12" inches (2.5 cm to 30 cm) or more, depending on the species. Some species are among the longest insects in the world.
Natural Habitat
Tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, and shrublands. They often blend into their surroundings on trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous. They primarily feed on leaves of various plants, often showing preferences for specific plant species.
Behavior Patterns
Masterful camouflage artists, mimicking twigs, leaves, or bark to avoid predators. They are generally nocturnal, feeding at night and remaining motionless during the day. Some species can sway rhythmically to further enhance their mimicry of vegetation moving in the wind. Many species can regenerate lost limbs.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans. They are not venomous and do not bite or sting. In some cases, large populations can cause defoliation of plants, but this is rare. Ecologically, they are a food source for birds, reptiles, and other insectivores, and play a role in plant consumption.
