Rove Beetle
Scientific Name: Paederus littoralis
Order & Family: Coleoptera, Staphylinidae
Size: 7 to 10 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Typically found in damp environments such as wetlands, riverbanks, and gardens, though they often wander onto structures like porches and decks.
Diet & Feeding
They are generalist predators that feed on smaller insects, larvae, and organic debris.
Behavior Patterns
Active during the day and often attracted to light at night. They run quickly with their abdomen turned upward, mimicking a scorpion, and are known for their distinctive bright orange and black coloration.
Risks & Benefits
Benefits the ecosystem by controlling pest insect populations. However, they possess a potent toxin called pederin in their hemolymph. If crushed against the skin, it causes 'Paederus dermatitis', a painful blistering skin irritation.
