Plaster Beetle / Minute Brown Scavenger Beetle

Scientific Name: There are several species within the family Latridiidae that are commonly referred to as plaster beetles. Common genera include Lathridius, Corticaria, and Cartodere. A specific scientific name is difficult to determine from the image alone without microscopic examination.

Order & Family: Coleoptera, Latridiidae (Minute Brown Scavenger Beetles)

Size: Typically very small, ranging from 1 to 3 mm in length.

Plaster Beetle / Minute Brown Scavenger Beetle

Natural Habitat

Damp, moldy environments, particularly in and around new construction (due to drying plaster/concrete), basements, bathrooms, kitchens, behind wallpaper, under loose floor coverings, or in areas with water damage or high humidity. They are often found on walls and ceilings where mold is present.

Diet & Feeding

They primarily feed on mold and mildew, particularly fungi growing on damp surfaces. They do not feed on household furnishings or stored food products.

Behavior Patterns

Plaster beetles are attracted to damp, moldy conditions. They are often found in newly constructed buildings where plaster or concrete is still drying, or in older buildings with water leaks, condensation problems, or poor ventilation. They are not strong fliers but can be found crawling on surfaces. Their lifecycle can be relatively short under ideal conditions (warm, high humidity, plenty of mold), allowing for rapid population growth. They tend to be most active in warm, humid environments.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Generally considered harmless to humans and pets, as they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Their presence indicates dampness and potential mold growth, which can be detrimental to human health (allergies, respiratory issues) and property (structural damage, unpleasant odors). They can be a nuisance pest when present in large numbers. Benefits: They can act as indicators of moisture problems within a structure, alerting occupants to conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed.
