Carpet Beetle Larva

Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci (typically Variegated Carpet Beetle)

Order & Family: Coleoptera; Dermestidae

Size: 2mm - 5mm in length

Carpet Beetle Larva

Natural Habitat

Indoor environments, particularly in darker areas like closets, under furniture, in carpets, and near natural fibers like wool, silk, or fur.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on keratin-based animal products (wool, fur, silk, feathers, leather), dried plant materials, dead insects, and pet hair.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae avoid light and prefer dark, undisturbed corners. They are slow-moving and go through several molting stages, often leaving behind shed skins that look like hollow versions of themselves. This is the distinct 'fuzzy' caterpillar-like stage before becoming a round beetle.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major household pest that damages clothing, carpets, and upholstery made from natural fibers. The bristly hairs on the larvae can cause an allergic skin reaction known as 'carpet beetle dermatitis' in some people. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter.
