Mole Cricket
Gryllotalpidae (various genera and species)
- Order & Family
- Order: Orthoptera, Family: Gryllotalpidae
- Size
- 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) in length
Natural Habitat
Found in moist soil, lawns, gardens, turfgrass, and agricultural fields; they are subterranean.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily omnivorous, feeding on roots, tubers, and grasses, as well as insects, larvae, and worms. Some species are more herbivorous, others more carnivorous.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal; they construct extensive burrow systems underground, often near the surface, which can damage plant roots. Males produce a distinctive chirping sound from their burrows to attract females. They are strong fliers (though some species are flightless), especially during mating seasons.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Considered pests in lawns, golf courses, and agricultural areas due to their feeding on plant roots and burrowing activity, which can cause significant damage to turf and crops. Benefits: Some species consume other insect pests, potentially offering a form of biological control. They also contribute to soil aeration through their tunnels, but this is generally outweighed by their destructive feeding habits in cultivated areas.
