Powderpost Beetle

Scientific Name: Lyctinae (subfamily)

Order & Family: Coleoptera; Bostrichidae

Size: 2 to 7 mm (1/16 to 1/4 inch) in length

Powderpost Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found in dry, seasoned wood, particularly hardwoods like oak, ash, and hickory; often occurs in floorboards, furniture, and structural timbers.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae tunnel through and feed on the starch and cellulose within dry wood, reducing the interior to a fine, flour-like powder.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are nocturnal and emergence occurs through small 'shot-holes' in wood. Subsurface tunneling is done by larvae, often going undetected until fine dust (frass) appears.

Risks & Benefits

Considered a significant pest of structural timber and wooden artifacts; can cause extensive damage to property but plays an ecological role in decomposing dead wood in nature.
