Natural Habitat
Deciduous forests and urban areas near elm trees
Diet & Feeding
Adults and larvae both feed on the foliage of various species of Elm trees, causing skeletonization of leaves
Behavior Patterns
Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on the underside of leaves; larvae feed for several weeks before pupating at the base of the tree; they often enter buildings in autumn to seek overwintering sites
Risks & Benefits
Primarily a nuisance pest when entering homes; can cause significant defoliation and stress to elm trees but does not pose a direct health risk to humans
