Debris-carrying Lacewing Larva (Junk Bug)
Chrysoperla spp.
- Order & Family
- Order: Neuroptera; Family: Chrysopidae
- Size
- 3mm to 10mm in length
Natural Habitat
Gardens, agricultural fields, and wooded areas, often found on leaves or trunks of plants infested with aphids.
Diet & Feeding
Voracious predators of soft-bodied insects like aphids, mites, thrips, and scale insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae use specialized hairs to attach debris, such as dust, plant material, and the corpses of their prey, to their backs as camouflage from predators like ants and birds. They have large, hollow mandibles used to pierce prey and suck out fluids.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to the ecosystem as natural pest control. While harmless to humans, they can occasionally deliver a minor, non-toxic 'nip' if they crawl on skin.
