Brown Recluse Spider (Identified by bite lesion)
Loxosceles reclusa
- Order & Family
- Order: Araneae, Family: Sicariidae
- Size
- Body length 6–20 mm (0.24–0.79 in); leg span of approximately 2.5 cm (1 in).
Natural Habitat
Found in warm, dry, and dark environments. Commonly hides in woodpiles, sheds, closets, basements, and occasionally inside shoes or bedding.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous scavenger and predator; feeds on small insects like crickets, cockroaches, and other soft-bodied arthropods.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and reclusive hunters that do not spin webs to catch prey. They are non-aggressive and typically only bite when inadvertently pressed against the skin (e.g., rolling over in bed or putting on clothes).
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The bite creates a characteristic necrotic lesion (loxoscelism) often exhibiting a 'red, white, and blue' pattern (central violet blister surrounded by a white ring of constriction and outer redness), as seen in the image. The venom destroys tissue and can cause deep ulcers that are slow to heal. Medical attention is recommended for proper wound care.
