Natural Habitat
Indoor environments (homes, museums, warehouses) particularly in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, attics, under furniture, or near baseboards; outdoors found in bird nests or bee hives.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibrous materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, dried plant products, and dead insects. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar outdoors.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills. The destructive larvae avoid light and hide in fabrics or cracks. They are known for their distinct splotchy pattern of white, brown, and yellow scales.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Major household pest; larvae can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and taxidermy. Hairs from the larvae can cause allergic dermatitis (skin irritation) in some humans. Benefits: In the wild, they act as decomposers of animal remains.
