Ox beetle (male)

Warm regions of the Americas, especially sandy soils, grasslands, gardens, and areas near decaying wood or compost.

Larvae feed on decaying plant material and roots in soil. Adults mainly consume sap, fruit, and other plant fluids, and may feed little.

Mostly nocturnal; adults are attracted to lights and often burrow or shelter during the day. Males use their horns in contests over mates or feeding sites.

Harmless to people and unable to deliver a meaningful bite or sting. Larvae help decompose organic matter, though large populations can occasionally damage roots or seedlings.
