Larvae feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae prefer dark areas and are often found under furniture or in closets. When disturbed, they may bristle their hairs. Adults are attracted to light and are often seen near windows.
Risks & Benefits
They are a common household pest that causes damage to clothing, carpets, and stored goods. They do not bite or sting but their hairs (setae) can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people.
