Cellar Spider (often called Daddy Longlegs)
Pholcus phalangioides
- Order & Family
- Order: Araneae; Family: Pholcidae
- Size
- Body length typically 6-10 mm (0.24-0.39 in), but with legs extended, can span 50 mm (2 in) or more.
Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in dark corners, cellars, basements, and garages. They prefer undisturbed, humid environments but are very adaptable to drier household conditions.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous; they feed on other insects, including flies, mosquitoes, and even other spiders (including venomous ones like hobo spiders or black widows).
Behavior Patterns
They construct messy, irregular webs ('cobwebs'). When threatened, they are known to vibrate rapidly in their webs to become blurry and difficult for predators to catch. They hang upside down in their webs.
Risks & Benefits
Benefits: They are harmless to humans and are excellent pest control, eating many household pests. Risks: Virtually none; while they have venom, their mouthparts are generally too small or weak to penetrate human skin effectively, and the venom is not medically significant to humans.
