Indoors in carpets, closets, upholstery, stored textiles, and dusty concealed areas; adults occur outdoors on flowers.

Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, silk, and dead insects. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are concealed, slow-moving, and develop through several molts; their bristly hairs can remain after they leave. Adults are small, oval, mottled beetles attracted to light and flowers.

Larvae can damage natural-fiber clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and museum specimens, and their hairs may irritate skin or airways. Adults pollinate flowers and help decompose animal remains.
