Natural Habitat

Ground beetles are found in a wide variety of habitats, including gardens, forests, fields, agricultural land, under stones, logs, leaf litter, and in soil. Many are nocturnal and hide during the day.

Diet & Feeding

Most ground beetles are predatory, feeding on other insects, slugs, snails, and larvae. Some species are omnivorous or herbivorous, consuming seeds or plant matter.

Behavior Patterns

Primarily nocturnal, they are active hunters. They tend to scurry rapidly when disturbed and often play dead. Larvae are also predatory. They undergo complete metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

Generally beneficial insects, as they prey on many common garden pests (caterpillars, slugs, aphids). They pose no direct risk to humans, though some larger species may emit foul-smelling defensive chemicals or pinch if handled.
