Carpets, upholstery, closets, stored textiles, nests, and other dark, undisturbed indoor areas. Adults commonly occur near flowers and windows.

Larvae eat keratin-rich materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, silk, and dead insects. Adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae hide in fabrics and shed bristly skins as they grow; they can persist unnoticed for months or years. Adults emerge to mate and lay eggs near suitable food sources.

Larvae damage textiles and may cause itchy, dermatitis-like reactions from contact with their hairs. They recycle animal-derived material outdoors, while indoors they are common household pests.
