Creeping Water Bug

Natural Habitat

Stagnant or slow-moving freshwater such as ponds, ditches, and lake margins, typically among vegetation.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; it preys on other aquatic insects, small snails, and occasionally small fish or tadpoles by piercing them with its rostrum and injecting enzymes.

Behavior Patterns

They are proficient swimmers that spend their lives underwater, surfacing occasionally for air which they store as a bubble against their abdomen. They are known for being very quick and aggressive hunters.

Risks & Benefits

They provide ecosystem benefits by controlling populations of small aquatic organisms. However, they can deliver a very painful, needle-like sting (bite) to humans if handled, often referred to as a 'toe-biter' reaction.
