Natural Habitat

Deciduous forests, woodlands, and suburban gardens across North America.

Diet & Feeding

Caterpillars feed on the leaves of cherry, plum, and other Prunus species, as well as birch and basswood. Adults do not feed.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal; they are active at night and attracted to light. When threatened, they may flash their hindwings which feature bright yellow and blue eye-spots to startle predators.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans; they benefit the ecosystem by serving as a food source for birds and bats. The caterpillars are generally not considered significant economic pests.
