Springtail (globular or elongate type)

Moist soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, compost, and damp indoor areas such as bathrooms or basements.

Feeds mainly on fungi, algae, bacteria, decaying plant matter, and organic debris; it does not bite humans.

Often occurs in large groups in damp conditions and can rapidly disperse by jumping with a forked furcula. Populations increase with moisture and decline when surfaces dry.

Harmless to people, pets, clothing, and structures; rare accidental contamination of food is not medically significant. They help decompose organic matter and recycle nutrients, though large indoor numbers indicate excess moisture.
