Is the online bug identifier really free?
Yes. You can identify insects and spiders from this page with no account and no download. The free result is the most likely name of your bug and its group. The full report, with scientific name, order and family, habitat, size, diet, behavior, and risks or benefits, is in the Bug Identifier app.
How accurate is AI bug identification from a photo?
It is a strong first guess, not a confirmed identification. Many species look alike, and a photo cannot show size, underside markings, or behavior. Treat the result as a starting point and verify important identifications with an entomologist or a local expert.
Can I use the result to decide whether a bug is dangerous?
No. Never use this AI identification to decide whether an insect or spider is safe to handle, or whether a bite or sting needs medical care. If you or a pet has been bitten or stung and you are worried, contact a doctor, poison control, or a vet.
What kind of photo works best?
A sharp, close shot with the bug filling most of the frame, in good light. Photograph it from above if you can, and include the legs, antennae, and wing pattern. Something for scale, like a coin, helps too.
Can it identify spiders, caterpillars, and larvae?
Yes. Beetles, butterflies, moths, ants, bees, wasps, flies, true bugs, spiders and other arachnids, grasshoppers, dragonflies, mantises, caterpillars and larvae, aquatic insects, centipedes and millipedes are all in scope. Photos with no bug in them are flagged as not a bug.
