Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Honeydew produced by underground aphids and mealybugs which they 'farm'.
Behavior Patterns
Subterranean and nocturnal; they emit a lemon or citronella scent when crushed or threatened. Large swarms of winged reproductive ants often appear in autumn.
Risks & Benefits
They do not sting or cause structural damage. They are largely considered a nuisance pest when they swarm indoors, but they benefit ecosystems by aerating soil.
