Natural Habitat

Soil under rocks, logs, or pavement, and near building foundations or in crawl spaces.

Diet & Feeding

Honeydew produced by underground aphids and mealybugs which they 'farm'.

Behavior Patterns

Subterranean and nocturnal; they emit a lemon or citronella scent when crushed or threatened. Large swarms of winged reproductive ants often appear in autumn.

Risks & Benefits

They do not sting or cause structural damage. They are largely considered a nuisance pest when they swarm indoors, but they benefit ecosystems by aerating soil.
