Broad-necked Root Borer

Found in deciduous forests, orchards, and yards across the Eastern United States and Canada.

Larvae feed on the roots of various trees and shrubs including oak, apple, and peach; adults generally do not feed or may consume small amounts of plant sap.

They are primarily nocturnal and are often attracted to artificial lights; larvae live underground for three years before pupating and emerging as adults in mid-summer.

Generally harmless to humans but can deliver a painful pinch with their mandibles if handled; larvae can be minor pests to fruit trees and ornamental shrubs by damaging root systems.
