Fishfly

Near clean, freshwater lakes, streams, and swamps; adults are attracted to artificial lights near water

Larvae are aquatic predators eating other insects, worms, and small invertebrates. Adults eat little to nothing, occasionally feeding on plant nectar or sap.

Nocturnal insects that are strong, clumsy flyers easily attracted to porch lights. Aquatic larvae (hellgrammites/fishfly larvae) live under rocks in water for 1 to 3 years before pupating on land.

Harmless to humans; despite large jaws they rarely bite and possess no venom. Aquatic larvae serve as an essential food source for fish and act as biological indicators of good water quality.
